Smother Mother
Production Design and Set Construction for 35mm 12 minute film | Director - Mark Sayles |
Designer and Art Direction - Katherina Radeva |
April-May 2005
Smother Mother is a tragic comedy that tells the story of a dysfunctional family - Wendy the mother, Glenn the father and their son Malcolm. The action takes place in three rooms- a living room, a dining room and Malcolm’s bedroom. The action moves between the three locations, two of which change drastically as the narrative and profile/action of the characters unfolds and develops.
The changes in the set are expressed by the constant transformation of Malcolm’s room from a bright yellow, grey and black to a plain matt grey. This represented the intensification of Malcolm’s addiction coupled with an addict’s inability to see multi colour induced by the repetitive burden of the habit, as everything becomes the same, an expression of a life with no meaning. A similar transformation happens in the living room, the space that Glenn occupies drinking, smoking and existing in the most animalistic manner, expressed by the progressive degradation of the wallpaper and floor.
